Everything on this site is free to read and always will be. This page is the whole explanation of how that works, what it costs, and what I won't take money for.

What I don't take

Why

The sponsors would become a little voice in my head.

I write about tech companies. I am, on a regular basis, extremely unkind about tech companies. And the companies who'd want to sponsor a newsletter for CX workers are — with remarkable consistency — the exact same companies I'd otherwise be writing about.

Bad Job Bingo exists so I can read a job posting that says we're a family here, unlimited PTO, must thrive in ambiguity and tell you what it really means. That only works if I'm not quietly running the numbers on whose money I'm holding.

And here's the part that actually bothers me: it would never take an angry email. No sponsor would have to complain about anything. I'd just have to wonder — once, halfway through a draft — whether this particular paragraph was going to become a problem.

Then I'd soften a sentence, without realizing it.

So...fuck that.

If you're a CX person doing good work

You will never have to pay me to talk about it.

Not through a sponsorship, not through a “boost,” not through a favor economy. If something shows up here, it's because I thought it was good.

If you're a reader

When I've got an opinion, it's mine.

Someone paid her to think that is not on the list of things you have to consider. That's what you're getting instead of a sponsor, and I think it's a better deal.

What it costs to run

all in 250 dollars a month, all in.

Hosting, the domain, email, and the tools that keep the job board and the resource library running.

That number can vary a little bit depending on what I'm trying to do in a given month, but that's roughly what the whole operation costs. It's not nothing, but it's also not a lot.

Also worth saying: I'll never inflate that cost artificially just to make a few extra bucks. I'm not running a media empire, and I have no aspirations to do so. I'm running a newsletter and some websites, and they cost what they cost, and I promise to be as honest as I can about whatever that dollar amount is.

So who does pay for it

Four things, roughly in order of how much weight they carry.

My actual job. Support Human isn't my income. That's the single biggest reason I get to be this stubborn about the rest of this site.

Paid subscriptions, from people who wanted to.

One-off contributions, from people who felt like it that day.

Fundraisers, a few times a year, where I ask directly.

That's it. That's the model. I'm committing to it, and taking it on faith that it'll work.

About the paid subscription

There's a paid tier.
It gets you nothing.

I mean that literally. Everything here is free — the Roundup, Bad Job Bingo, the job board, the resource library, Footnotes, and the whole Career Suite. A lot of you found this place while you were job hunting or getting slowly ground down at work, and charging y'all for the useful stuff is just a rotten thing to do.

So the paid tier isn't access to anything. It's just a way to pay me, if you want to. You're covering the hosting bill and telling me to keep going.

I'm aware this is a catastrophic sales pitch. It's also the only version of this work I can run while staying true to who I am and what I value.

Subscribe if you've got funds to spare and you want to. Don't if money's tight. Seriously — I care more about you than I do your money.
