Steph's Notes:

The Careers page is straightforward, run-of-the-mill tech company fare.

This seems like a somewhat hybrid role between standard Community work and Support work, which I always enjoy seeing. Given the duties, I do wish this were a more senior title, although the pay is great regardless.

Enthusiasm for building something new, coming up with new ideas, and working autonomously. You know how to engage communities and you have new ideas to bring to Medium that you’ll launch and oversee.

I like the way they phrased this – a thoughtful alternative to the lazy and boring "must work independently."

Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Man, we were so close to avoiding the standard job cliches!

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a product- and systems-thinking mindset.

You know what, this is also a nice break from the "high intelligence" bullshit I so often see in job descriptions. I know exactly what they're asking for and therefore can ascertain *why* they're asking for it.

Working with a fully distributed team: We’re totally remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France

Sing it with me: this is not a benefit!

Original Job Description: Community Manager

Everyone has a story to tell. Medium is the place for stories to take shape and take flight. We believe that what you read and write matters, and we’re building a place that rewards depth, nuance, and time well spent over clicks and sensationalism. Over 100 million people connect and share their wisdom on Medium every month — and we’re growing! Our mission is to deepen our collective understanding of the world through the power of writing.

As the Community Manager, you'll serve as Medium's liaison to writers and editors by providing community support, distributing content, and fostering engagement. Your efforts will build Medium's presence and trust among the people using our platform. You will offer clear guidance and support to our writers and editors, collaborate with specific groups—for instance, the editors in the Boost Nomination Pilot program—and oversee our off-platform communities and social media. Your aim will be to create a positive and engaging atmosphere where writers feel appreciated and connected, but moreover where they feel they can succeed in sharing their insights and connecting with an audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community Building and Communications: Develop and implement strategies to create a thriving community for Medium users, particularly writers and editors. In collaboration with our product marketing team, you’ll organize events, webinars, and activities to engage and connect writers. You’ll communicate regularly with the community through emails and blog posts. You’ll also look at ways to use other tools, like Slack or Discord, to build out the Medium writer community. This will include outreach and recruitment for publication programs.
  • Support and Clarity: Provide clear and timely support to writers, addressing their concerns and questions. Create resources and guides to help writers navigate our platform effectively. Address policy issues (and, on occasion, enforcement) with grace.
  • Specific Communities: Work with distinct writer and editor communities, understanding their unique needs and providing tailored support and engagement.
  • Social Media Management: Oversee our social media channels, creating and curating content that resonates with our writer community. Engage with writers on social platforms to build a strong online presence.
  • Feedback Loop: Collect feedback from writers and communicate their needs and suggestions to the broader team. Collaborate with product and development teams to enhance the writer experience based on community insights.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 3-5 years of experience in community management, support, writing, editing, or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of Medium’s platform or other user-generated content platforms Strong track record of managing communities
  • Enthusiasm for building something new, coming up with new ideas, and working autonomously. You know how to engage communities and you have new ideas to bring to Medium that you’ll launch and oversee.
  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for different audiences.
  • A strong understanding of the digital publishing landscape and the needs of writers, editors, and readers.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a product- and systems-thinking mindset.
  • Experience with Slack, Discord, or similar communication tools.
  • Passion for writing and supporting writers.

Benefits

In addition to the new skills you'll pick up, here's what else you'll enjoy by working at Medium:

  • Working with a fully distributed team: We’re totally remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France
  • Generous benefits that support your wellness and professional development 100% covered
  • Medical benefits for employees and 70% for dependents
  • Parental Leave & additional Family Support (Cleo)
  • Mental health support through Talkspace
  • Stipends for Wellness, Learning and your home office/wifi
  • Unlimited PTO and standard company holidays

About Medium

Medium is a home for human stories and ideas. We believe that what you read and write matters. Words can divide or empower us, inspire or discourage us. In a world where the most sensational and surface-level stories often win, we’re building a system that rewards depth, nuance, and time well spent. A space for thoughtful conversation more than drive-by takes, and substance over packaging. Ultimately, our goal is to deepen our collective understanding of the world through the power of writing.

Worked here?

I rated the posting. You might know the place. Anything you can add about what the job is actually like is worth more than my read of the job description — that's the whole reason this box is here.

Read this bit first

Comments on a job listing are public, and the company can read them. If you work there now, or you're mid-process with them, post under a name they wouldn't recognise. It takes ten seconds and nobody here will think less of you for it.

One ask on how you write it: stick to what happened to you. My manager told me the on-call rota was optional lands harder than this company lies to candidates — and it's a lot harder to argue with.

Before you post

Disagree with me all you like — that's half the point. Don't come after other readers, don't post anyone's private details, don't pitch anything, and don't post anything you didn't write yourself. I delete what breaks that and I don't argue about it. Full version →
